We are proud to announce that our proposal "Expanding the Impact of Newark Community Food Systems," was awarded by the Rutgers Equity Alliance for Community Health (REACH) Initiative. The project's purpose is to address the social determinants of health (SDoH) with emphasis on food access and security in economically disadvantaged areas in Newark, NJ. The project is a collaboration between RICSI and its Community Engagement Partner - Newark Science and Sustainability Inc., a 501(c)(3) organization and facilitator for Newark Community Food Systems. The project will provide healthy food access and nutrition education to 100 families residing in Newark, and reach community members through engagement events to promote healthy food access, community green development and pathways to green jobs, as well as a series of workshops Farm to Table community meal events to encourage healthy eating, healthy living practices, and environmental education.

Upcoming Events and Initiatives

Farm-To-Table Community Meal: Join us on Saturday, October 5th for our annual Newark's Harvest: A Farm-To-Table Community Meal! Held in our local neighborhood, please join us for fun activities, vendors, entertainment, and delicious food! This is a pop-up Zero Waste Event!

Newark's Harvest - A Citywide Garden Tour: Join us from September 8th to the 14th for various garden tours and activities! The Citywide Garden Tour serves to encourage healthy eating, healthy living practices, and environmental education through a series of workshops and by reaping the benefits from the harvests of each participating farm space. Some activities include:

  • Garden and Greenhouse Tours
  • Eco Art
  • Farmers' Market
  • Live Cooking Demo
  • Storytelling and Live Music
  • Community Wellness through Hands-On Activities

June 2024 Sustainable Living Empowerment Conference: This conference aims to put a spotlight on grassroots' led efforts of creating better health and wellness for our communities and environment. 

Women's Health & Wellness Workshop Series:

  • Nutrition through the Lifecycle: This workshop explores the clinically based nutritional needs at significant times of growth, development, and aging. 
  • Doula Workshop: This workshop integrated doula support, wellness practices, and food justice nutrition education for expecting families. 

Ecopreneurship Virtual Training: This program focuses on building sustainable communities through ecopreneurship/small business development. 

Farm to Table Sponsorship: This program provides access to weekly fresh, locally grown produce packages for 20 weeks for enrolled families. 

Food Safety Manager Certification: This training provides a 5-year national manager certification for Chefs, Cooks, Caterers, Entrepreneurs, Ecopreneurs, Teachers, Farmers/Gardeners, etc. looking to expand their knowledge on food safety and management. 

Sustainability Ambassador Program: This program is designed for youth Sustainability Ambassadors and helps promote sustainable living practices, such as healthy eating, active living, urban farming, and clean energy in their homes, schools, faith organizations, and other networks to which they belong.
